This year’s jazz festival is expected to draw a crowd of about 250,000 jazz fans scattered all throughout the city of Copenhagen. More than 1,100 concerts are in the lineup of this weeklong jazz event, which will start on July 4.
Summer in this side of Europe will be more vibrant and alive with hours of great music performances. Concert venues include open-air grounds like town squares and parks, theatres, major concert venues, and cafes in Copenhagen. Most shows are offered free for everyone’s enjoyment, young and kids alike.
The Copenhagen Jazz Festival has been a regular crowd-drawer in the capital of Denmark since 1979. It started when Copenhagen welcomed the American jazz artists popular at that time. More American musicians came and inspired the Danish music screen. Since then, local and international bands come together in Denmark for days of ‘all that jazz’.
The number of concerts increases each year—making this jazz event one of the largest music festivals not only in Denmark but in all of Europe. This 2014, concert headliners include Concha Buika, Christian McBride, Hiromi, Grammy Award-winner Gregory Porter, Joshua Redman, Chick Corea, Manu Katche & Richard Bona, Dave Holland, Eric Legnini, Stefano Di Battista, The Trio Project, Stanley Clarke, Children of the Light Trio, and Thurston Moore & Mats Gustafsson.
Some international artists like Wayne Shorter, Return to Forever, and Desert blues from Mali will also be performing. American guitar legend John Scofield, Spanish flamenco diva Concha Buika, and the great jazz quitar player Christian McBride are expected to rock the whole of the Koncerthuset concert hall and Jazzhouse.
The festival isn’t just for the adults as there will also be kid-friendly jazz performances. This means you can bring your kids with you and expose them to music that you’ve grown to love.
To help you get around Copenhagen, an official festival app can be downloaded to your iOS or Android smartphone. The app will serve as an Official Guide to Copenhagen Jazz Festival and is free for download.
